Hi Joe,

As you are already an elected MEP, which Parliament will you attend if you are also elected to one of the 4 seats in Dublin West.

  • will you choose one and abandon the other ?
  • will you attempt to attand both ? .....is this allowed ?
  • can you operate a type of "list " system and nominate a replacement MEP from your Party ?

I cannot waste my No. 1 .. if you will not attend the Dail.

Thanks for your email.

European legislation enacted in 2002 abolished the situation where MEPs could also be sitting members of their respective national Parliaments. This legislation came into force at the 2004 European Elections and belatedly in Ireland at the 2007 General Election. Similar legislation came into force in Ireland in 2003 in relation to Local Government whereby TDs and Councillors can no longer sit on both Councils and in the Dáil at the same time.

If elected, Joe intends to step down as a MEP and take up the TD´s position in the Dáil.

All candidates in the European Election nominate a replacement list of 5 people who are asked in order to accept the MEP´s seat. The Socialist Party´s replacement list can be found here. www.europarl.ie As of yet, no decision has been taken to whom the replacement will be.
